Program History
Since its early beginnings in 1960, Eta Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., maintained a scholarship program managed by its Education Director. That program amounted to making an award presentation at the local Pasadena area high school assembly meetings along with a number of other community service organizations. The candidates at that time were males selected by the local high school counselor or school liaison.
Our scholarship program is named, The Ray Bartlett Academic & Civic Excellence Scholarship Program, open to both males and females. It is named in honor of Ray Walter Bartlett who recently left us in June 2008. Bartlett was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, a seven-term past chapter president, and an icon in the Pasadena community. He attended Pasadena High School (PHS) and achieved numerous academic, civic, athletic and service accolades during his life. He was a lifelong friend and teammate of Jackie Robinson. Following his graduation from PHS, he enrolled at Pasadena City College where he again excelled academically and on the field of sports – four sports that is, football, basketball, track, and baseball. Later he transferred to UCLA, where he joined Jackie Robinson in leading the football team to new heights. Ray retired from the military and spent his career with the Pasadena Police Department and Los Angeles County. He served as the Grand Marshall of Pasadena Tournament of Roses 1999 Rose Parade. His legacy will always be remembered as candidates selected must exemplify Ray’s life story.
The Ray Bartlett Academic & Civic Excellence Scholarship Program launched in 2004 under its first contemporary Education Director, Jerome Cannon. Three scholarships were awarded and paid out in 2004 during an awards ceremony held in Dulan’s Restaurant on Crenshaw Blvd., in Los Angeles. Each year, we continue to advance the cause of providing scholarship funds to worthy high school candidates and first year collegians in the greater Los Angeles and Inland Empire. This has become a massive effort evaluating up to 100 candidates annually. However, at the end of the day, our goal is to put smiles on hard-working young scholars by recognizing their academic and civic accomplishments.
